It is seldom that we find an all original, low mileage survivor 280SL with full documentation from new, but this is exactly what we have here. Sold new by Foreign Motors in Boston MA on April 22, 1969 to a woman from Dover, MA. Records show she traded in her 1965 Oldsmobile 442 convertible towards her new Pagoda. On February 29, 1984 the car was gifted to her son with 20,008 miles on the odometer. He started bringing it to us for service on May 31, 1988. Our first service invoice recorded the mileage at 26,790. In the Fall of 1989, we purchased the car from him and sold it to a local collector on November 15,1989. The mileage at the time of the sale was 27,226. Almost four years passed and we purchased the car again, this time on July 28, 1993 with the recorded mileage being 28,776.
The car was sold again on August 3, 1993 to one of the founding brothers of Friendly Ice Cream. The car went to his home in Vermont where it remained in his and his wife’s care until we bought it back after their 18 years of ownership. We picked the car up from their home on July 27, 2011. The odometer was recorded at 37,942. We sold the car again to a prominent Mercedes collector who purchased two 280SL’s from us on the same day in 2012. He moved both to his collection in Florida where they remained in his care for 6 years. We purchased both cars back from his estate in September 2018. We believe these are two of the finest examples of W113 280SL’s in existence period.
The Light Ivory car featured here is a true original survivor and retains its original factory paint, chrome, carpets, interior, drive train, etc. The soft top was replaced and is in as new condition. In the words of Bob Hatch from his write up in July of 2011 “I believe this to be the best original, untouched 280SL in the country. As restorers of these cars for over 38 years, I can always restore one to like new condition but I cannot create an original car-only Mercedes-Benz could have done over 40 years ago!”
