Back in our inventory is this well maintained, highly optioned, 1998 993 Targa with a 6-speed manual gearbox.
The 1998 911 Carrera Targa is one of the most interesting and rare of all 911 Targa’s produced during the Porsche air cooled era. Porsche imported a total of just 122 glass roofed Targa’s in 1998. It is believed that of the 122 examples produced, 100 were equipped with the Porsche’s Tiptronic automatic transmission. That would make this car just 1 of 22 examples produced with a 6 speed manual transmission. 1998 was the also the last year of the iconic air cooled engine and brought to a close what many purist believe the last true 911’s. The 993 generation 911 is the most technically advanced of the production air cooled cars and 1996 through 1998 incorporated Porsche genius Vario Ram intake system which added and additional 14 hp to the 3.6 litre engine of earlier 993’s.
The 911 Targa was first introduced in 1967. The Targa name was derived from the famed Targa Florio race in Sicily that Porsche would run at end of each race season in the 60’s and 70’s. Many constructors entered their race cars with removable hard top sections to allow air into the cockpit during the grueling endurance race. The removeable panels became known as “Targa tops”.
